Hey, I was reading this post where the guy talks about using his servers GPU in a VM for gaming using PCI-E passthrough. Something like this would be perfect for me. I regularly play games on my Mac book Pro's crappy GPU, it gets incredibly hot and fans run at full. I also have a fairly decent PC that I use as a server of sorts, it has Plex and some other things but I can definitely put it to better use. I immediately went on search but found the information a little overwhelming. Lots of people saying its difficult, others saying its easy, others saying 2 monitors are needed. I have some videos to watch as well, but thought I would make a post outlining my specific needs to hopefully end up on the right track. Ultimately i'd love to repurpose my PC/server to allow me to play games in a VM, on my Ma cbook Pro. I would use my Macbook's input devices to control it, I don't really need any displays for the server, though i'm happy to hook something up if its required. Is what I want to do, definitely achievable? What is the best HOST OS? I have Windows 10 licence for guest. What virtualisation software do I need? Are there any videos/guides worth following that will help? I'm basically a little in the dark at the moment, until a few hours a go I didn't think this was possible so I will take any help I can get to achieve it. Thanks • • • • •. If you already have a PC, I don't see the point unless you have the immediate need of hosting other non-gaming VMs at the same time. People only do this for systems with a lot of cores that they plan to run servers on at the same time. Kondaveeti raja chiranjeevi song audio song. Or - they also will run multiple graphics cards allowing multiple people to play games off the same PC. With the only purpose to stream off a PC, virtualization is not needed. Either way, you will need a low latency game streaming setup installed on the VM (such as Steam), because VDI, RDP and VNC will not be fast enough to game on. Hl7 interface specifications. As others have said, just use steam and add your non-steam games. You can even add notepad to Steam and it will open up your entire Windows desktop so you can access the start menu if you wanted. Also, you can use Steam Link and a gamepad if you ever want to stream through your TV. EDIT: Noticed the comment about Plex. If you want to run plex on the same machine, I still don't recommend virtualization unless you insist on having Plex from a Linux instance. If you do, your windows VM will need Steam installed and simply pass the video card to the guest. I would recommend any virtualization based Linux distribution that has an easy to use GUI. Such as Proxmox. Thanks for this. ![]() ![]() I'm not that bothered how it works, as long as it works well. My main problem is space. I don't have a desk with mouse/keyboard and nice monitor. I have a fairly decent PC/server tucked away due to little space. I can hook it up to a TV and use an XBOX controller for FPS games but for games like WoW where a mouse and keyboard is essential. I end up sitting on my Macbook, which is rubbish for games. All settings on low and it still runs really hot with fans on full.all while i've got a half decent gaming machine sat there doing nothing simply because it's not practical to use it for these types of games. I read about PCI-E passthrough on here and it sounded like the answer to my prayers: use Windows for gaming on my Mac with full access to the GPU connected remotely. The only reason I wrote off Steam In-Home Streaming is because i've used it in the past and it sucked for games like WoW. I could never get it running. Plex isn't a concern at the moment, i can refactor my setup if need be, I do like tinkers so would have been happy to mess about in software and hardware to get it running nicely but if Steam now does the job them it may not be worth it. • • • • • • •. I'm not sure why you think that PCI-E passthrough is your answer though. All PCI-E passthrough does is passes the device from the host to the Virtual machine that lives on the same host. That allows the virtual machine to have direct access to the hardware - such as USB ports, RAID cards and even video cards. It will not pass it remotely to your macbook.
